The construction industry makes a considerable impact on the economy of every country. Construction projects are now gradually becoming considerably large and more complex in order to fulfill ever-increasing requirements. Trillions of dollars are wasted every year on failed projects in the world due to several reasons. Professionals in the industry are struggling to find these reasons behind it. Even though proper project management practices are used in the project, still failures can be observed. Therefore it is important to understand the relationship between the factors affecting the success of construction projects. The researcher is therefore going to study the influence of project management practices on the success of construction projects in Sri Lanka. In literature review, the researcher finds the influencing factors (independent variables) through a theoretical and empirical review. Then a conceptual model is designed to test it. Testing methodology is established under chapter 3. Epistemological position is objectivism, while theoretical perspective is positivism. The research approach is deductive and it is laid under a quantitative approach. Online survey questionnaire is the technique selected for testing hypotheses. Non probability convenience sampling technique has been selected for the research and an online questionnaire was distributed among the contacts available from the professional bodies and contacts known to the researcher. 73 completed responses are collected which are presented and analyzed in Chapter 4. It was found that factors selected as independent variables project scope, competency of project team, communication management, stakeholder management and risk management have strong positive relationships with dependent variable of successful delivery of construction projects. Then the conceptual model is accepted while rejecting null hypotheses. In the final chapter conclusions and recommendations have been given to the project professionals and practitioners to apply in the industry. For further research, the researcher proposed to conduct the research using other factors also by increasing the size of the sample to increase the accuracy of findings, while finding other influencing factors.
