Abstract

~ With the increasing potable water demand, it has recognized from literature that adoption of water efficiency (WE) will reduce the heavy demand whereas the constructions will be environmentally friendly. Despite its importance, the implementation of WE has not received much attention in Sri Lanka. The research aims at finding the factors restraining the implementation of WE and to identify strategies to overcome the barriers. A total of 100 questionnaires were distributed among the green professionals and 82 responded.  The study revealed that lack of legislation enforcement and monitoring, lack of client’s understanding and resistance to change from convectional technology are core factors restraining the implementation. Further, the study found that enhancing public and construction professional’s awareness might help to overcome the barriers. The study recommends that there is a need to enhance the public awareness by television advertisements and social media and arrange Continuous Professional Development (CPD) sessions for the construction professionals.

Other research activities

~ Provision of comprehensive knowledge of urban freight transportation operators and policy-makers on the negative impacts of the current freight transportation practices and suggest a practical sustainable strategy to enhance the operation.

It is being discussed for introducing a dedicated rail link to Bandaranyaka International Airport from Colombo Fort. For that accurate passenger demand estimation should be carried out. Hence, currently working on to develop a model to estimate the passenger demand for a dedicated rail connection between Colombo fort and BIA. And to investigate the effect of service improvements, towards the demand.
